El Camino Real, Suite 102, Encinitas, CA 92024 (760) 753-7700 I'm Grant Layton from Layton Dental and we're in Encinitas, California and today we're going to do something really cool. We're going to demonstrate the smoking tooth which many of you have seen on the internet and many have wondered about and we're going to do it in real time. That means we're going to take the camera in and see if we can do it seamlessly without having to turn the camera off. So that we can see that this really happens and the mercury really does come out of teeth and old silver fillings can still give off mercury gas in the mouth. So if you will follow me into my lab, we are going to come over here to my sophisticated machinery. This sophisticated apparatus is a cardboard box that's holding an old miner's lamp. The miner's lamp emits a UV light that is really hard to see but it makes things glow in ultraviolet. This is a black lamp. OK. So we have a black lamp that we're familiar with and we have some stationary here which is just writing paper. This is an old cardboard box but the writing paper glows a little when you put the black lamp on it. You can see the shadow of my fingers so you can see what the lamp is doing. So we have here -- I'm going to give the cameraman time to focus in on this. We have an old silver filling and a very old tooth. This tooth has probably been 10 years since it was extracted and may have existed in the mouth with the silver filling for decades. So this old tooth that's all dried up and I have a pencil here with a nice, soft rubber eraser on it. We're going to take this tooth and rub it to simulate chewing and we're going to hold it up against this screen and the screen glowing will create a shadow. See the shadow of the tooth? And the mercury vapor that comes off of the tooth blocks the light from the black light and creates more of a shadow so that we can see where the mercury vapor is. So let's turn the lights down. And so here we have chewing gum, chewing some steak, hot Cheetos, anything. We can't simulate coffee because -- I guess if we warm the tooth up, we can simulate a cup of coffee. So we're going to take this tooth and hold it in here in front of the screen and we can see the mercury vapor coming off of the filling. That's because I rubbed the fillings, simulated chewing. Are we in focus, Bob? Oh, good because we're getting some nice smoke off the tooth. This is what's called the smoking tooth. It's really just mercury vapor blocking the light from the black lamp that makes the screen glow. So what we're looking at is not smoke. We're looking at the shadow. Did everyone see the shadow? Here's something interesting and I noticed it when we were practicing this that because I rubbed the tooth so hard, I rubbed mercury off of the old filling and the eraser now smokes. I'll hold the eraser here. So this eraser represents maybe some food you were eating and swallowed. It has picked up the mercury and it's smoking off the -- it's evaporating. See, mercury evaporates like water and so we're seeing the evaporation of mercury. It's a liquid metal. So there's no trick on the pencil there? What about the other side? Let's put the point up here. No, there's no mercury off the point. There's no mercury on my finger. We just have mercury on the eraser because we were rubbing the old silver filling which is decades old. Now we know mercury is very toxic. It's more toxic than lead so this mercury, we breathe it in, we eat it. It goes to our brain and our body and in its own little way ... Forms a toxic element in our body. So we rub the tooth and eat some more. Let's have some more chewing gum. Let's have a second stick of gum. So there we are. An old mercury filling just being abraded a bit. A mercury filling is not an alloy like a metal. It's like a lead -- I mean it's like a mud brick with mud, straw and water and as the brick dries out, this is what we're seeing. It's just like mercury gas off of an old filling. It's like a mud brick drying out except there's enough there that it can last for decades and slowly come out. So I think that we should not be putting silver fillings in the teeth of children and it's a poison. It's more toxic
